| Backyard Composting -- The Shrewsbury
Health Department supports backyard composting as a clean
and simple way to get rid of leaves and grass clippings.
Many of us are wondering what to do with all the yard
waste we have at this time of year. The Massachusetts
Department of Environmental Protection banned the disposal
of leaves, yard waste and grass clippings at landfills
or incinerators because these materials are easily converted
into compost, a usable and beneficial product, and the
disposal capacity we have in this state is needed for
handling other waste which can not be composted. Residents
are reminded that it is against state law to burn leaves
or to dump yard waste into wetlands, streams or ponds.

Diseases of the Month: West Nile Virus (WNV)
and Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) -- West
Nile Virus (WNV) and Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE)
are two potentially serious diseases that are carried
by mosquitoes. Last year four people in Massachusetts
were diagnosed with EEE. There were no human cases of
WNV in the state in 2004, but the fifteen mosquito pools
tested positive for the disease indicating that the
disease is still present. Please go to the Massachusetts
Department of Public Health website for more information:
www.mass.gov/dph/wnv/wnv1.htm
You may also access current reports of WNV and EEE
virus in birds, mosquito pools, horses and humans in
Massachusetts at this site. Learn how to protect yourself
and your family by covering up with long pants and long
sleeves, using insect repellent and eliminating the
places on your property where mosquitoes may live and
breed.
